What kind of events or activities does Journal offer?

Our well-known Journal Life Program offers wide range of activities to enhance your experience, including cooking classes, gym classes, career talks featuring industry professionals, organised day trips around Melbourne and Victoria to discover iconic landmarks and cultural attractions. Additionally, we host social events like game nights and themed parties, workshops on personal development and financial literacy, volunteering opportunities to give back to the community, wellness programs for mental and physical well-being. We’re dedicated to providing a vibrant and supportive community tailored to your interests and needs.

What is the process for receiving mail and packages?

Residents receive packages through our convenient parcel locker system. Once a parcel arrives, it will be placed in a secure locker. You will then receive a notification via email or text message, with a unique code or QR code. Simply use this code to unlock the parcel locker and retrieve the item when convenient. This ensures that the packages are safe and accessible at any time.

For regular mail, it will be delivered to the your designated mailbox. If you have any specific delivery requirements or need assistance, our friendly reception team is always available to help.

What time is the check-in at Journal Campus House?

The room will be ready from 4PM on the day your lease begins. However, our reception is available 24/7, so feel free to contact us to check if an earlier arrival is possible.

Is it possible to share an apartment with someone of the same gender?

For Twin-Studios and Studio apartments, we follow a same-gender policy. For Large Two-Bed Apartments and Three and Four Bed Apartments while we cannot guarantee same-gender arrangements, we will do our best to accommodate your preference. We encourage you to let us know your preference when making the booking.

How can I book an event space?

You can book an event space via our Journal App, or you can book directly with our reception team.

Are pets allowed?

Unfortunately, we do not permit pets including fish, birds, or reptiles. However, we do make exceptions for residents who require the assistance of a trained and registered Service Dog or Assistance Dog.

Do you have bike storage?

Yes, we have designated bike storage areas where bicycles must be stored. Bicycles should not be stored or taken into any other area of the facility. Journal offers a bike-share service for residents, which can be booked at reception. Please note that Journal is not responsible for the security of personal bicycles, so you are required to lock your bicycle securely.

Can I decorate my room?

Yes, you can personalize your room with decorations to make it feel more like home. However, please ensure that any decorations do not cause damage to the walls, furniture, or fixtures. If you are unsure about what is allowed, please check with the Journal team.

Can I bring my own furniture?

While our rooms are fully furnished, you are welcome to bring small personal items to make your space more comfortable. However, large furniture items should be avoided to ensure compliance with safety regulations and to maintain the integrity of the provided furnishings.

What is your cancellation policy?

Can I have guests stay over?

Yes, it’s your home so you can have guests staying over occasionally. All overnight guests should only stay in your own room. We would ask you to respect your fellow residents and let your flatmates know as well as sign in your guest at reception.  You are responsible for the behaviour of any guests you bring to Journal. The Journal Portal provides more information.

What happens if something in my room needs repair?

If something in your room needs repair, please report it to the Journal reception team through our Journal app, the resident portal or at reception. Our maintenance staff will address the issue as soon as possible to ensure your comfort and safety.

What are the check-in and check-out procedures?

Upon check-in, you will need to present a valid photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s license. Our staff will guide you through the check-in process, including providing your room keys and any necessary information about the facility. During the check-out process, you are required to return all keys and ensure your room is left in good condition. Any damages or missing items may result in additional charges. It is important to check your email for any specific instructions related to check-in and check-out procedures.

Do you offer printing services?

Yes, we do. Log in details can be found on your resident portal and will be emailed to you upon your arrival. Please approach our friendly reception team to add credit to your account.

Do you have laundry facilities?

Yes, we do have laundry facilities which are paid for via the app or machine itself. Our laundry rooms are equipped with modern washing machines and dryers to make your laundry tasks convenient and hassle-free. The machines are easy to use, and instructions are provided to ensure you get the best results for your clothes.

Can I swap my room once booked?

Room moves may be possible, subject to availability. We recommend mentioning any specific requests at the time of booking so we can better accommodate your needs. Please note that room changes may incur administrative and cleaning fees. For further details, please contact reception.

How secure is the building?

When entering the building there is a turnstile that is only accessible by residents. All door entry points are key fobbed. We have CCTV covering all common areas, our lifts require room key access to enter the levels, and our on-site staff are available at reception or patrolling the building 24 hours a day. Their main focus is to keep residents safe & happy, and the building secure.

Can I extend my lease if I want to stay longer?

Yes, you can stay for the duration of your studies. We will contact you prior to the end of your existing lease to determine if you would like to renew and for how long.

Can I move out if I am still in contract?

If you need to leave earlier while still under contract, you will need to find another student to take over your tenancy for the remainder of your contract.

Before you can start setting up a tenancy takeover, please contact our reception team and fill in the required forms. If you are unable to find anyone, you must pay any remaining rent you owe.

Once you find a replacement, we will need some details before we can set up a contract. Until the new tenant completes their booking, makes payment, and collects their keys, you will still be liable for all the fees.

Can I send parcels to the building before moving in?

Yes, you can send parcels to your Journal building before moving in. However, please note that we have limited space, so please inform us beforehand.

Can I sublet my room to someone else?

No. If you find yourself needing to move out for any reason, please contact the property team for advice.

Booking FAQs

How do I book a room?

Booking a room is easy, you can do it all in four steps when booking on this site:

  1. Make a room and lease length selection
  2. Register your personal details
  3. Accept the booking terms and conditions
  4. Pay your 1-week deposit

When these four steps are complete your room is booked Depending on when you apply, you may have up to seven days after accepting the booking terms and condition to make your two-week deposit payment. Alternatively, you can complete all stages at once. Our team is available to assist you during the process if you need any help.

What are the different room classes?

Journal ranks rooms by classes based on overall view and outlook. Depending on the room type, Journal offers three classes for students to choose from. Classes with a superior outlook attract an additional fee on top of the base weekly room rate.

Regular: Rooms located with a courtyard or restricted lower level view.

View: Rooms located with an extended view across the surrounding area, the city, or the university precinct.

Premium View: Rooms located on upper levels with multiple windows all with extended views.

How do I pay rent?

You can set up a direct debit with us, allowing us to take the payment directly from your bank account without any hassle or surcharges. Alternatively, you can pay via the resident portal.

What dates do contracts start?

Depending on the lease you select you may have up to three start dates to choose from. Available lease start dates are shown during the application process. If you need to arrive before your lease starts, please contact us and we’ll confirm availability and cost.

What contract lengths do you offer?

Leases covering a Full Year (12 months) and a Semester (6 moths) are the standard lease lengths and can be booked directly on the website.

What is your credit card surcharge?

Our credit card surcharge is 1.85%. Most residents pay their rent with direct debit which does not incur any surcharges.

How often is the rent paid?

The rent is paid once every two weeks.

How much is the bond?

The bond is equivalent to 4 weeks’ rent, and you need to pay the bond before your arrival.

What are the payment options for deposit and bond?

The prices shown are per person per week, and they include all utilities and unlimited high-speed internet, full access to all the facilities, common areas and participation in the Journal life program.

Is dual occupancy in a studio allowed?

We consider dual occupancy on a case-by-case basis. Please contact our team to discuss your specific situation, and we will do our best to assist you.

Can I choose who I live with?

When you make a booking, please specify who you would like to stay with. For apartments, it depends on the room type, but we will do our best to organise for you to be with friends where possible.
