Universities

University of Queensland

Founded in 1909, the University of Queensland is one of Australia’s Group of Eight research universities, known for its work in medicine, engineering, environmental science and business. Most students spend their days at the St Lucia campus, set on a bend of the Brisbane River, though UQ also teaches at Herston, Dutton Park, Gatton and UQ Brisbane City on Queen Street.

That spread shapes what University of Queensland student accommodation needs to do. Living in the Brisbane CBD keeps the city campus a few minutes’ walk away and St Lucia around 30 minutes by bus or ferry. Opening in Semester 2, 2027, Garden Place is our purpose-built student accommodation at 240 Margaret Street, sits right in the middle of it.

FAQs

How much does student accommodation cost near UQ?

Student accommodation near UQ is priced per week, with the rate shifting by room type, size and floor level. At Journal, that weekly figure is all-inclusive, covering electricity, water, Wi-Fi, furniture and facilities. On-campus accommodation and private rentals bill some of those separately, so compare the total weekly cost rather than the headline.

What is included in the rent?

Rent covers your furnished room, electricity, water, unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi and every shared facility in the building. That includes study spaces, the gym, the games room, laundry facilities and the outdoor spaces around the gardens. The Journal Life events program is built in as well, so nothing arrives as a separate bill.

How close is Journal Garden Place to the University of Queensland?

Garden Place will open at 240 Margaret Street, roughly 700 metres from UQ Brisbane City on Queen Street. The St Lucia campus is 7.3 kilometres away, around 30 minutes door to door by bus or CityCat. The city campus is walkable, and St Lucia runs on the ferry or a direct bus.

Is UQ Brisbane City the same campus as St Lucia?

They are different sites. UQ Brisbane City is a CBD campus at 308 Queen Street, running postgraduate business and executive education. St Lucia is the main campus, home to most faculties and research centres. The University of Queensland also runs the Herston, Dutton Park and Gatton campuses, each with its own focus.

How do you get from Brisbane City to UQ St Lucia?

More than ten direct bus routes link the Brisbane CBD with UQ St Lucia, stopping at Chancellor’s Place and UQ Lakes. The CityCat ferry runs along the river to the UQ St Lucia terminal. Toowong, Dutton Park and Indooroopilly are the closest train stations, with connecting buses from each.

Is it hard to find student accommodation in Brisbane?

Rooms near UQ do get tight around the start of each semester, so booking early makes a real difference. Students usually weigh up residential colleges and on-campus options against off-campus accommodation like share houses, private rentals and purpose-built buildings. Brisbane’s cost of living sits below Sydney and Melbourne, which helps.

Can I pay monthly for student accommodation?

Payments at Journal run fortnightly, so rent leaves your account every two weeks rather than in one monthly sum. Rooms are priced per week, which makes comparing options simpler. Every payment is all-inclusive, so utilities, Wi-Fi and facilities are already covered by the time rent comes out.

Can international students studying at UQ book with Journal?

Yes, and international students make up a big part of our community. You can arrange UQ student accommodation before you fly out, so you land with a furnished room, a bed and people around you from day one. We ask for a Confirmation of Enrolment when you book.

How secure is the building?

Security runs around the clock. Speed gates control who gets into the building, secured key card access covers the rooms, and CCTV monitors the common areas. Reception is staffed 24 hours a day, so there is always someone to speak to, late at night or first thing in the morning.

What types of rooms at Garden Place are available?

Room types across Journal properties include studios for living solo, twin studios that work as a shared room for two residents, and ensuite rooms inside shared apartments where each bedroom has its own bathroom. Garden Place will offer a mix of studio and shared apartments, with the full range confirmed closer to opening.
