James Cook University

James Cook University (JCU) taught its first courses in Townsville in 1961 and is Queensland’s second oldest university. Most of what JCU is known for happens in the tropical north, across its Townsville and Cairns campuses. Brisbane works differently. The campus here is a high-rise on Queen Street in the CBD, teaching business, education, information technology and social work.

Most Brisbane universities spread their students across two or more campuses, so where you live becomes a compromise. JCU doesn’t. There’s one Brisbane campus, and it’s already in the CBD. That makes finding James Cook University student accommodation mostly a question of how close you want to be. Our Garden Place building at 240 Margaret Street is purpose-built student accommodation a few streets away, close enough that walking beats waiting for a bus.

FAQs

Does James Cook University have student accommodation in Brisbane?

No, JCU has no on-campus accommodation in Brisbane. Living on campus is only an option at JCU’s Townsville and Cairns campuses, so Brisbane students look at off-campus accommodation options like purpose-built student housing, homestay or share houses. Our Garden Place building sits a few streets from Queen Street, and our team can talk you through room types.

Where is the James Cook University Brisbane campus?

Teaching happens at 349 Queen Street, a high-rise in the middle of the Brisbane CBD. Unlike JCU’s northern campuses, there are no grounds to cross here, just lifts and a city block. Garden Place sits nearby on Margaret Street, and our team can point you to the walking route if you’re visiting.

How far is Journal Garden Place from JCU Brisbane?

Both addresses sit inside the Brisbane CBD, so the trip is a walk rather than a commute. Garden Place is on Margaret Street and the campus is on Queen Street, a few blocks apart. Public transport doesn’t come into it. Ask us about room options if being that close matters to you.

Does JCU Brisbane run trimesters or semesters?

Trimesters. JCU’s Brisbane campus teaches across three study periods a year rather than the two-semester pattern most Australian universities follow. That means three starting points instead of two, so your housing dates may not line up with friends at other Brisbane universities. Tell us when you start and we’ll talk through which lease length fits.

What is included in the rent at Journal Garden Place?

Everything sits in one weekly payment. Your room comes furnished with air conditioning, utilities and high-speed Wi-Fi, and the shared spaces include study areas, a gym and laundry facilities. Bathroom setup depends on room type, with ensuite bathrooms in many multi-room apartments. Bike storage and the cinema are yours too.

How much does student accommodation cost in Brisbane?

Price comes down to room type more than anything else. Twin studios with a shared bathroom sit at the cheaper end, while a studio or an ensuite room in one of our shared apartments costs more. Purpose-built student accommodation quotes one all-inclusive weekly rate, so utilities and Wi-Fi don’t arrive as separate bills.

Do international students need to sort accommodation before arriving in Brisbane?

Sorting it before you fly is the safer approach. Most international students at JCU Brisbane arrive without local rental history, which makes private leases hard to secure from overseas. Student accommodation can be booked before you land and before enrolment is finalised. Message our team and we’ll walk you through it.

Can visitors or partners stay overnight at Journal?

Overnight guests are generally fine, subject to our visitor policy. Residents sign guests in at reception, which is staffed around the clock, and entry runs on secured key card access and speed gates with CCTV throughout the building. Guests can’t move in, though, since rooms are for students only.

When should JCU Brisbane students book accommodation?

Earlier is better, and that holds no matter which intake you’re starting. Rooms get harder to find as teaching approaches, and booking early usually means more room types to choose from. International students sorting things from overseas feel the squeeze most. Get in touch early and we’ll help you plan the timing.

Do you need to be a student to book a room at Journal?

Yes, rooms here are for students only. We’ll ask for your Confirmation of Enrolment at check-in, and that applies to domestic and international students alike, across undergraduate, postgraduate and pathway study. Booking before your enrolment is finalised is fine, since the paperwork can be handed over later.
