FAQs

Common questions from Malaysian students

What is the difference between Journal and other providers?

Journal offers student apartments designed for balance between study and lifestyle. Our residences feature welcoming social spaces, dedicated study areas, and extras like BBQ zones, a games room, and a rooftop terrace with city views. Located near Victoria Market, students also enjoy regular social events that build friendships and create a true sense of community.

How early should I book to secure the best private student accommodation options?

It’s best to book your student accommodation a few months before the semester begins. This gives you access to the widest range of rooms and the best locations. Many international students finalise bookings early, so securing your space in advance makes the move to Melbourne smoother and less stressful. Also, some of our room types sell out very quickly and once they’re gone, they’re gone! So it’s best to book your preferred room type as soon as you can.

Are there furnished student housing in Melbourne, or do I need to buy furniture?

All Journal properties offer all-inclusive student accommodation, meaning every room comes fully furnished and ready to live in. You’ll have a bed, study desk, storage, and kitchen essentials already provided, so there’s no need to buy or move large furniture when you arrive in Melbourne.

Can I bring family or guests to stay with me?

Yes, you can have family or friends stay in your room during your time with us. Short-term guests are welcome, provided they’re signed in at reception for safety and consideration of other residents. For overnight stays, let the Journal team know ahead of time so arrangements can be made according to building policies.

Is halal food available near Journal properties?

Carlton’s Lygon Street and the CBD near Market Way offer abundant halal options. Persian, Turkish, and Malaysian restaurants cater to diverse tastes, whilst Queen Victoria Market stocks fresh halal ingredients. Malaysian students will find familiar comfort food and budget-friendly dining throughout both neighbourhoods.

Can I change rooms after moving in?

Yes, room changes can be made after you’ve moved in, depending on availability. The Journal team is always ready to help you find an option that better suits your needs. An administrative or cleaning fee may apply, but the process is straightforward and easy to complete.

How far is Journal from major universities in Melbourne?

The University of Melbourne is right across the street, while RMIT University is within a 5- to 13-minute walk or a quick tram ride away.
