Some days you want company. Other days, you want to disappear into a book or a project. Our shared facilities give you room for both, all under one roof, and all included in what you pay. However your week is shaping up, there’s a space at Journal that fits it.

Melbourne Student Accommodation Design Designed for every side of student life

The best part of living somewhere new isn’t always the room. It’s the rooftop where you end up talking till late, the kitchen that smells like six different dinners at once, the quiet corner where a study session turns into a friendship. Great Melbourne student accommodation design understands this, which is exactly how we build at Journal. We treat the shared spaces as the heart of each building, not an afterthought once the bedrooms are done.

Social and Lifestyle Spaces

Where your downtime lives

Students relaxing on a rooftop garden with Melbourne city skyline views, enjoying shared outdoor spaces at their accommodation

Rooftop Terrace

Head up to the rooftop terrace for open sky, long city views and a rooftop garden made for slow afternoons or catching up with your friends after class.

Courtyard

Grab some fresh air in the courtyard between classes, find a shady seat to read or use it as an easy place to meet people without leaving the building.

Lounges

Sink into the shared lounges when you want to relax but not be alone, from the sky lounge up high to softer corners for a chat, a show or a lazy Sunday.

Music and Gaming

Turn it up in the music and gaming room, part music lounge and part games room, set up for console sessions and jam nights without disturbing anyone's study.

Cinema

Settle in at the cinema for movie nights, group watch parties or a solo film on the big screen, a proper break from your laptop and all the small stuff.

24/7 Gym

Work out at the onsite gym whenever it suits, open 24 hours and included in your rent, so early mornings and late nights both fit around your timetable.

From slow afternoons to big deadlines

Study and Create Spaces

Room to focus and create

Bookable Rooms

Book a room when a project needs real focus or a group needs space to spread out. Our bookable study rooms come with big desks and wall space for planning, so exam weeks and group assignments get a proper home away from your bedroom. Reserve one for solo work or a full study crew.

Library

Bring your reading to the library when your room feels too close to the fun. This is the quiet, calm part of the building, lined with comfortable seating for long sessions of study or research. It's the spot residents reach for when a deadline is near and every distraction has to go.

Makers Space

Get hands-on in the makers space, built for the creative side of student life. Sketch, build, print and prototype in a room designed for making rather than only studying, with space to spread out. It's where side projects and late ideas actually get made.

Communal Kitchen

Cook in the communal kitchen, a shared common-area space with room to spread out and make a real meal rather than reheat leftovers. This is where weeknight dinners turn social, someone always has a pot on, and a quick cook-up becomes an hour of chatting well past the washing up.

Onsite Café

Order your coffee at the onsite café without stepping outside, sorted for a fast breakfast between lectures or a catch-up that doesn't need a whole afternoon. It's the easy middle ground between your room and the city, right downstairs when leaving the building feels like too much.

Quiet Study Zones

Find silence in the quiet study zones, our dedicated study spaces for heads-down focus. Individual desks and low-noise corners make these the go-to for solo work, close reading or the kind of deep concentration a busy common room can't offer. Pure focus, nothing else.

Podcast Studio

Record something worth hearing in the podcast studio, a quiet room set up for clean audio when you have something to say. Use it for a uni assignment, a side project or the podcast you keep meaning to start, without paying for studio time across town.

FAQs

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation is housing designed specifically for students, rather than apartments or share houses. It pairs private rooms with shared study, social and lifestyle spaces, all-inclusive rent and on-site support. At Journal Student Living, that design-led approach shapes every building, so the communal spaces work as hard as the bedrooms do.

Do all residents get access to every space?

Every resident gets full access to all shared spaces, with nothing locked behind a higher tier or an extra fee. From the rooftop terrace and gym to the library and study rooms, the whole building is yours to use. It all sits inside one weekly all-inclusive rent, so you never pay per visit.

Are Journal's shared spaces open 24 hours?

Many of Journal’s shared spaces are open around the clock, including the 24-hour gym and some of the study areas, so you can use them whenever your timetable runs late or starts early. Some social spaces follow quiet hours overnight out of respect for residents sleeping or studying, so exact access can vary by space.

Can residents book the study rooms and event spaces?

Residents can book study rooms and larger event spaces through the Journal portal in a few taps. Reserve a study room for a group project or a focused solo session, or book an event space for a club meeting, a birthday or a bigger get-together. Our building team can help you lock in a time.

Is there a quiet place to study away from the shared areas?

Quiet study is easy to find, with dedicated quiet zones, a communal library and bookable study rooms set apart from the busier social spaces. These calmer areas suit anyone who needs real concentration, and they are especially popular with postgraduate students juggling heavy reading and research. When you need silence, there is always a spot.

Can I have guests in the communal areas?

Bringing guests into the communal areas is welcome, for a shared meal, a study session or a casual hang. Guests sign in and stay with the resident who invited them, which keeps the building secure and comfortable for everyone. It is an easy way to see friends or family close to home.

Are the shared spaces used for Journal's events?

Our shared spaces host the Journal Life events program right through the semester. Up to six or seven events run each week at peak times, from social nights and cultural celebrations to wellbeing sessions and career talks. The rooftop, lounges and communal kitchen all become venues, so there is usually a reason to come down.

Do Campus House and Market Way have the same spaces?

Both properties share Journal’s design approach, with thoughtfully designed spaces that balance study, wellbeing and social life. While the core facilities are consistent across both buildings, each property also has its own unique features. Market Way, for example, includes a cinema, podcast studio and makers’ space alongside Journal’s signature study and social areas.
